Here's what Jeff thinks the tech sector will bring us in 2021 Each year, I like to take an appearance at the big image and forecast what's simply around the corner. Long time readers of my work know that I follow the most exciting tech patterns on the verge of mass adoption.
These trends are experiencing exponential growth and producing incredible opportunities for financiers. I want to make sure all our readers are prepared for what's next. And with that in mind, let me draw the photo of what I see being available in the next 12 months 1. 5G Gadgets Our new 5G (fifth-generation) wireless networks are a topic I have actually been covering for years now.
Even though the COVID-19 pandemic interrupted supply chains in 2015, an outstanding 250 million 5G-enabled devices were still sold. Especially in the second quarter, there were supply chain disruptions, manufacturing hold-ups, and work stoppages. And all of this eventually led to Apple postponing the release of the 5G-enabled i, Phone 12 by 2 months.
When you think about all of that, selling 250 million systems is remarkable. More significantly, the hold-ups brought on by the pandemic produced a lots of suppressed need. And that demand is now going to be pushed into 2021. In fact, I forecast that more than 500 million 5G devices will be shipped in 2021.
Phase 3 of 5G When I have actually talked about 5G in the past, I've described its three various phases. In Phase One, the facilities of these new networks is constructed out, including all the brand-new towers and fiber-optic circuitry that 5G will need. In Phase 2, 5G gadgets go on sale.
And in Stage 3, 5G services start to be used. That's when we start to see applications working on 5G networks. Think about things like huge multiplayer games over a mobile phone. That's not possible with 4G. It will be with 5G. And my 2nd 5G forecast for 2021 is that we will begin Stage Three by this summer.
But they will care if there are interesting applications that can only be accessed with a 5G phone. So more and more customers will go out to buy a 5G phone to gain access to these applications. That causes more 5G apps being developed. In reality, 5G is going to open a suite of extraordinary applications: self-driving vehicles, the Web of Things, robotic surgery, and more.
The financial investment opportunities going forward will be massive. 3. CRISPR Genetic Editing Stepping away from 5G, the next important innovation I anticipate in 2021 is CRISPR genetic editing. CRISPR represents "clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeat." It's a mouthful. But it is among the most amazing developments in biotechnology.
